One-liner: A lot of the footage in our pilot film “Within silence” is a contribution from documentary filmmaker Petteri Saario. The video “The Magic of Northern Nature” shows just one sample of his amazing work.
Silence Quote: “Silence doesn't mean a total lack of sounds. Original and organic sound of nature is never noise to me. Even thundering or storming can be felt and understood as one dimension of silence. Artificial man-made noise: the sound of oil, is threatening (together with artificial light) most the harmony of nature. Unfortunately environment without the sound of oil is gone. That makes me sad.”
A FEW WORDS:
Petteri Saario is a Finnish documentary filmmaker, specialized in directing and shooting documentaries about disappearing natural and cultural values and the complex relationship between man and nature. Petteri Saario has been shooting northern nature (inc. forests, seas, lakes, rivers and bogs plus cultural environments) and on the everyday life of northern people living close to nature for the last twenty years. Very passionate about nature and human nature, his motto is "through the heart to the brain". He runs an independent production company DocArt that is the leader of its field in Finland.
One-liner: This video is an exact result in time of the musical vibrations that created it - as seen through the Sound Illuminator, which uses sunlight and tone sensitive LED lights for illumination.
Silence Quote: ”Silence only truly exists where there is no matter, but we can endeavor to silence the mind by being in the moment.”
A FEW WORDS:
I’ve made this work to better know my place in the universe. Our ability to travel the cosmos being limited, I’ve built a machine in an attempt to observe elemental transactions. I’ve created a mechanical solution to what is a metaphysical problem, forcing basic elements of perception - sound, light, and matter - into a singular experience. This is a video of sound encountering light as seen through the medium of water. On one hand, I’ve staged common phenomena and on the other hand I’ve captured tiny cataclysms never to be repeated. I bring you evidence of a minute history, in which no instance is petty and every instant too complex to perceive in its entirety. A moment is all time, an atom the universe. This video aims to capture the beauty and turmoil that occurs inside the most pedestrian events. Light bounces on water, sound waves march toward oblivion.
One-liner: A myriad of details in an evolving fractal landscape.
Silence Quote: ”Silence is the lack of superfluous distraction whilst completely absorbed in your own thoughts.”
A FEW WORDS:
The work is an exploration showing how 'resonances' in the complex parameter landscape of fractals can create surprising structures ranging from organic to geometric. It is intended to be a peacefully mesmerizing journey.
One-liner: TYB Gesture explores the variety of line present within a natural environment. It also seeks to bring an associative awareness to the sound of creating lines to our constructive perception of the landscape.
Silence Quote: ”This video uses sound, but also functions silently. Silence can create a meditative space that is more active than noise. Silence focuses all of your senses rather than entertaining your ears.”
A FEW WORDS:
I created TYB Gesture to explore drawing in other dimensions, outside of its traditional two-dimensional confinement. I wanted others to experience line, feeling it in motion and duration. My piece stimulates other senses like seeing- resonating image with line, texture and touch, feeling the line through the textures and movement. Though the video is silent a constructive process is taking place in the viewer.
One-liner: Video showing the silent and invisible EMFs through the sound of an EMF meter.
Silence Quote: “Electro-magnetic fields (EMF) are silent and invisible, yet they affect our biology.”
A FEW WORDS:
My work is to help parents reduce the EMF pollution in their lives. Electro-magnetic fields (EMF) are silent and invisible, yet they affect our biology. However, most people cannot sense it. By using special measurement devices, I can make this invisible toxin visible. Once people hear the EMF pollution in their environment, they can begin to understand it and take actions that will protect the health of their children. I created this video to show the invisible through sound.
One-liner: The work responds to the auditory hallucinations that cause me anxious anguish due to lack of control.
Silence Quote: "I hear and see things that are not there, I wish they were silent, I don't want to hear these voices, but there is no way to stop them."
A FEW WORDS:
My work explores my ill mental health, and the patterns of my manic and depressive episodes.
The submitted sound piece is a direct response to the audio hallucinations that I hear daily. The sounds are warped and muffled, you may even miss them if you do not concentrate, but they are there in the background provoking and picking up on my weaknesses.
If you heard these ‘voices’ would you begin to believe that the sound was real?
The piece is relevant to the Power of Sound because the hallucinations are authoritative and commanding. It relates to the topic of Silence because I wish they were silent; I don't want to hear them but there is no way to stop them.
One-liner: Visualisation of bird sounds using 3D particle software.
Silence Quote: ”Silence to me is like a pause in reality, where I question what my existence truly is for a brief almost unconscious second.”
A FEW WORDS:
This piece was created to give a visual representation to bird sounds. It was created to demonstrate that sounds too can take a visual form, in particular the organic nature of a bird call, borrowing forms from nature that include plants and insects and reformatting them into a moving structure, almost decoding the bird call into something familiar. My visualisation of bird sounds is a chance for nature to talk when the world is silent and for me to listen to her language.
Silence Quote: ”Silence is the stillness between sounds.”
A FEW WORDS:
Inspired by sound; this piece elevates a simple action by the insertion of an emotional experience. This piece shows a residue of life, a constantly varying degree of presence and clarity. The swing is almost always in motion, but the forces propelling it are constantly fading and changing. There is a sense of grief, a feeling of memories lost and influences forgotten. This piece plays with the power an emotionally loaded sound has by emphasizing the everyday stillness that surrounds it.
One-liner: A black video with no audio meant to disrupt the consumption of images in our culture and shift the viewers awareness back to themselves and their surroundings.
Silence Quote: ”Silence allows us a greater awareness of the world we live in.”
A FEW WORDS:
This project is inspired by the proliferation of imagery in our culture. There is an ever-growing number of still and moving images distributed through billboards, magazines, televisions, computers, and paintings. In recent years, new technologies including mobile phones, laptops, and wireless Internet connections have allowed us to distribute and consume larger amounts of imagery like never before.
In order to draw attention to the creation and consumption of imagery, I have created works in various media that employ the color black. Black disrupts the illusionistic quality of the screen, be it an actual computer or mobile phone screen, a printed magazine, a billboard, or the 2 dimensional picture plane of a painting. The works also employ a glossy finish, which, together with the black, render the screen mirror-like and reflective. The works negate the illusion of the screen and the reflections point the viewer back to themselves and their immediate surroundings.
A shift in consciousness occurs in the viewer from a mediated viewing experience to an unmediated, mindful experience. My video is a visual and aural silence in a culture that is constantly bombarding us with images and sounds.

One-liner: CymaScope video of the 'song' of a living cell
A FEW WORDS:
The 'song' of a living cell was made visible with a CymaScope instrument to study the inherent geometry; crucially, there are striking resemblances, providing proof to the ancient saying: 'as above, so below'. CymaScope videos reveal the beauty inherent in the sounds of Nature, beauty that represents the power of sound to touch the soul.
Living cell
Living cells create sound as a natural aspect of their metabolic process and each type of cell has a unique 'song' that changes when the cell is stressed. Termed 'sonocytology', this new science has been pioneered by Dr James Gimzewski and may hold great potential for medical diagnosis and therapy in the future. An Atomic Force Microscope is employed to 'listen' to the sounds of cells. In this short video the sound of a healthy yeast cell has been made visible on the CymaScope instrument, revealing complex geometrical features.
Silence Quote: ”In escapable noise of one’s own silence”
A FEW WORDS:
Even in our own silence we cannot escape sound- the sounds of our bodies, our breath, the blood running through our veins… in fact, each and every atom in our body can be said to be vibrating in resonance.

One-liner: CymaScope video of the sound of star HR3831A
A FEW WORDS:
The sound of star HR3831A was made visible with a CymaScope instrument to study their inherent geometry; crucially, there are striking resemblances, providing proof to the ancient saying: 'as above, so below'. CymaScope videos reveal the beauty inherent in the sounds of Nature, beauty that represents the power of sound to touch the soul.
Star sound
Atomic processes create sounds within stars, which minutely modulate the star's light. This 'star song' radiates across the Cosmos and asteroseismologists on earth are able to retrieve the song by a process of demodulation, helping them to learn more about the star.
The CymaScope is able to make visible the sonic signature of stars from sound files prepared by astrophysicists, and the resulting dynamic geometries may provide a useful analog for students.

One-liner: A journey through the beautiful Hoh National Rainforest.
Silence Quote: ”Silence is incredibly golden and helps bring the mind to a more balanced place when there is so much nonsense noise (of all kinds) in this world.”
A FEW WORDS:
We created this to inspire the world! To make them aware of the natural beauty that surrounds them.
One-liner: Photography and Video Project realized in Greenland.
Silence Quote: ”Silence is like the place where I have been realizing this project, you can hear your own thoughts, feelings and stop for a second to think, because of this, silence might be scary, you just need to tame it.”
A FEW WORDS:
It is my answer for feeling isolated, in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, during polar night, windy and snowy winter. With restless and variable nature, massive ice bergs which change the view in every second.
One-liner: Fabrication of memory and the creation of reality.
Silence Quote: “White noise represents the absence of silence in our minds, highlighting how we are never able to fully escape our memories, even if they are obscured.”
A FEW WORDS:
While creating this particular work, I was thinking about the unreliability of personal memory. How do we know what is real or what we have invented? I decided to explore the fabrication of memory while recording this video, using frantic sounds and white noise as a means of signaling an obstructed or false memory. I completely remove the use of language in my work, similar to the way that dreams naturally happen through memory by enabling visual imagery to become the only reality. I take information and crush it in a large pile, piecing it back together again as my process. White noise represents the absence of silence in our minds, highlighting how we are never able to fully escape our memories, even if they are obscured.
One-liner: Stock footage of silent mass meditation
Silence Quote: "When we meditate together on mass, we connect in a field of profound silence that is pregnant with immense potential for loving and creative connection."
A FEW WORDS:
Project on collective silent meditation experiences and their effects on the human mind and physiology, the environment and society at large.
We are relational beings. We need connection for survival. How we connect determines how well we live. When we connect deeply with love and care, we flourish, when our connection is reactive, we feel disconnected and we suffer for it. Meditation is a practice that enables us to witness our reactiveness and learn to become interactive. When we meditate together on mass, we connect in a field of profound silence that is pregnant with immense potential for loving and creative connection. Love and Creativity are the foundational qualities of our moment-to-moment fulfillment.
